Salt + Shine

“We will not hide these truths from our children; we will tell the next generation about the glorious deeds of the LORD, about his power and his mighty WONDERS.” -Psalm 78:4

Something extraordinary happens when we meet ourselves on the road of life. During this spectacular encounter, when we come face to face with all the good, the bad, the ugly, and the amazing that make us who we are, it’s here that we can unwrap our purpose and potential for use and live out precisely what we were made for.

The collide with self might be born out of trauma or triumph; gifts or grace; the blessings or even those things that seem like curses. Either way, once the meet happens, there is only one of two choices to make in deciding the way forward, 1) HIDE and stay hidden, or 2) RISE; above the fear and insecurities with boldness and confidence—with a made for more mentality, to be the salt and shine at all cost.

Jesus encouraged us to be this salt and shine (aka light) in the world, when He said,

You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. 14 You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

Matthew 5:13-16

Vulnerability is what generates this impact and turns out our most significant influence. It is also in our being different that we can be a light and seasoning in this dark and tasteless time and culture.

The idea isn’t to purposely live out some tell-all book or documentary. It’s about putting ourselves (the lessons and losses) to good use along life’s way. It’s in the distribution of our story—the writing, telling, giving, and even the better living, that allows us to sow a seed or water one previously planted. Remember, the great commission is designed for all to be saved, grow, and then pollinate others for salvation and growth.

ReWriters are the ones who have been through a thing or had to learn life by way of another’s account and thus made a conscious decision to be impacted by it and use the lessons to help others be improved. ReWriters are empowered to bring hope and work as the hands and feet of Jesus. For that one someone considering suicide or for another someone, stuck at the edge of a breakthrough, near ready to give up and run the opposite way. Those timely voices of personal testimony can bring the encouragement to choose life or the endurance to keep pushing through and never giving up. It’s an ever-sweet reminder of why we ReWriters matter.

We benefit from each other because we often have so much in common. Personal storytelling arouses empathy and comforts kindly. It’s why sharing our experiences and truth carries so much weight, even if only to one. Then that one can, in turn, cultivate a life and story that might impact an entire next generation.

Famed theologian Albert Schweitzer once said, “Happiness is the only thing that multiplies when you share it.” And although I am fond of his words, I disagree somewhat with the statement. The truth is, not every story is a happy tale, yet a timely story shared will not only multiply but has the potential to impact our entire world.

I am confident in what the Proverb proclaims, “a truthful witness can save a life.” I know this for myself to be accurate because truthful witnesses have come along in my lifetime to divinely deliver some of that right-on-time hope, help, and healing for my soul. It’s why I choose to pay it forward with my storytelling. It is also why I share other ReWriters through this blog.

So, if you are a ReWriter with a story you’d like to share, don’t hesitate to reach out. We would LOVE to meet you!

Blessings + Favor.
